HOUSE35
In the city of Chennai, amidst the quaint residences, abutting a busy road stands this contemporary haven, an inward looking vegetation filled home. The different parts of the home are connected with each other through light. White becomes the primary tone for this Chennai home. Dark brown and green integrate with the same throughout the house.
Breaking the linearity of the space was a challenge due to the narrow site. The open plan in this house includes an expansive living and dining, which is visually segregated from each other by a light filled courtyard. Vegetation seamlessly fuses with the living areas breaking the monotony of white and wood. The courtyard is the central node which visually connects different spaces of the house. The dining and kitchen are elevated from the living and the steps adjacent to courtyard conveniently transforms into an informal seating.
The challenge was to bring in natural light, as the home was flanked by tall buildings on either side, and this is resolved by placing large windows and skylights that flood the living and dining area with ample light and breeze. The upper level features a wide corridor leading to the rooms as well as to the recreational area.
The grilled skylight of the courtyard casts patterns of light and shadow, visible from the upper level. The linear opening above the staircase, enveloped by wooden strips cast a rhythmic pattern of light and shadow throughout the year at different gradients.
